Bring it on, says Shenae Grimes. Grimes, a gorgeous 18-year-old Canadian actress whose credits include Naturally, Sadie and Degrassi: The Next Generation, is going big-time, going Hollywood and going for the brass ring with90210, the CW's hotly anticipated spin-off/reinvention of that 1990's stalwart, Beverly Hills, 90210. Grimes stars on the show as, essentially, the Brenda Walsh character. She's Annie Wilson, a good girl from Kansas who's thrown in with the swanky, occasionally skanky, claw-bearing sharks at West Beverly High. Grimes is part of a hot, sexy cast that includes Tristan Wilds, AnnaLynne McCord, Jessica Stroup, Michael Steger, Dustin Milligan and Ryan Eggold, as well as Lori Loughlin and Rob Estes, and "Beverly Hills, 90210" vets Jennie Garth,Shannen Doherty and Joe E. Tata (yes, Nat is back, too!). UGO recently caught up with the chatty and charming Grimes, who provided some insight into her experience so far and what viewers can expect to see when "90210" debuts on Sept. 2.

UGO: You tested for both Silver, who's being played by Jessica Stroup, and Annie. Take us through the very end of the audition process.

Shenae Grimes: I did the test for both, so it was kind of a toss-up. But I met Jessica Stroupat our screen test. As soon as I met the girl, she was just so cool and we totally hit it off. We ended up exchanging numbers, actually, at the screen test. I knew that this girl was totally perfect for Silver. So I was like, 'All right, Annie is my best bet.' My fingers were crossed and I heard that Hilary Duff had been offered my role. That was certainly a shock to my system and kind of a bummer, but I was like, 'You know what, if I've got to lose out to anybody, someone that's as established as Hilary Duff ain't too shabby. So I'll take it. I made some good connections and whatever will happen, will be.' And a few days later I got what I call the buffer phone call from my agent. He's been giving me them for the past four years, the buffer phone call where he calls and says, 'OK, Shenae, things went real good on this one, but I think it might be time to start looking at other things, start reading other scripts because I don't know how this is going to work out, blah, blah, blah. It's kind of coming down to the wire, so we need to start moving on.' And I'm like, 'Yuuuch, all right. Oh, well. C'est la vie.' I wasn't banking on it too much because it seemed like such an unattainable thing to me. And then 20 minutes later I got a phone call from all of my agents saying, 'Congratulations, Hilary's out, you are in, and you are now Annie on the new 90210.' I was in shock for a good couple of hours.

UGO: How cool is to have Rob Estes (Melrose Place) and Lori Loughlin (Full House) as your parents? They're not exactly ugly...

Shenae Grimes: Oh my God! It's unreal. I remember that I saw Lori at the screen test and I was like, 'Guys, guys, I saw Aunt Becky! I saw Aunt Becky!' I totally didn't put two and two together that she'd be auditioning for my mother, and then when we both got cast I was like, 'Oh, my God, we look a lot alike. It's kind of freaky. She looks more like me than my real mom does.' It's totally flattering, too, because I could not ask for a hotter set of parents. They are absolutely beautiful and such beautiful people, just so kind and so warm. They have taken on the mom and dad role for me right off the bat, gave me their numbers and were like, 'Anything you need, before getting out here, if you want to go look at places...' They were just so awesome and supportive. They knew I was a young girl moving out from home for the first time, and let alone a different country. So they have been great with me, and I'm just kind of soaking it up, the way that they are on set. They have been at this for a long time, so they are certainly seasoned pros, and I'm just soaking it all up and learning as much as I can from them. And also Jessica Walter (who plays Annie's alcoholic, ex-TV star grandmother), talk about seasoned pro. Hello. She is quite the old-school Hollywood actress. So I'm learning and building these relationships and trying to grow as much as I can from it all.

UGO: How much did you know about the original show before signing on for 90210?

Shenae Grimes: We got the first four seasons of Beverly Hills, 90210 sent to us on DVD as a welcoming gift from the network. That was awesome, but I certainly didn't need to watch them again to remember what went on because I remembered the first four seasons in particular like the back of my hand. My mom really raised me on 90210. That was kind of our mommy-daughter bonding session once a week, 90210 and Party of Five. So I was very familiar with the old show. It's so exciting for me and obviously everyone is honored to have Jennie and Shannen and Joe E. Tata back on the show, but for me it's a real, real shellshock, and it's really setting in what I'm here doing. It's cool, and much like the Rob-Lori situation, it's such an honor to have them on board. And I really am looking to them for as much guidance as they're offering because they're the only ones who've been through what we're about to experience.

UGO: 90210 is the sort of show that can put a young actress on the map. How ready are you for everything - magazine covers, paparazzi, Internet attention, etc. - that may happen in your very near future?

Shenae Grimes: I just don't know. I really don't know. I don't know what I'm in for. I have never done this before. This is my first American gig ever, let alone the crazy phenomenon that it is and is turning out to be. We've actually done so many magazine covers already. For a few weeks there we had one or two photo shoots going on every weekend. That was a little bizarre. I love taking pretty pictures and getting to play dress up and all the rest, but it was like, 'What is this all for? We don't even have a show yet. Get me on a set. Get me doing the real work that I'm here to do That should just be the icing on the cake.' So that was a little bit surreal, to say the least. Once we got on set I was like, 'All right, now I feel the wheels turning. Now it feels all right.' So now the photo shoots on the weekends are the icing on the cake to what we are doing. But as far as the press and the paparazzi and all that kind of stuff, it's a very foreign world to me. Thank God I'm surrounded by the best people, the most grounded and down-to-Earth people around, so we're all leaning on each other and we're all planning on holding each other's hand walking through this madness that's about to ensue.

UGO: Tu as auditionné pour Silver, qui est joué par Jessica Stroup, et Annie. Raconte nous la fin de l’audition.

Shenae Grimes : J’ai passé l’audition pour les deux rôles, alors c’était un peu le harsard. Mais jai rencontré Jessica Stroup à l’audition. Dès que j’ai rencontré la fille, elle étaitcool et nous nous sommes tout de suite entendues. Nous avons fini par nous échanger nos numéros. Je savais que cette fille était parfaite pour le rôle de Silver. Alors je me suis dis « Ok, Annie est mon seule espoit, j’avais les doigts croisés et j’ai entendu qu’Hilary Duff s’est vu proposé mon rôle. C’était un choc dans ma tête, une sorte de poisse mais je me suis dis « Tu sais quoi, si je perds le rôle, c’est Hilary Duff qui l’a obtenu, ce n’est pas si minable » Alors je l’ai pris, peu importe ce qu’il arriverait. Et quelques jours plus tard, j’ai eu un appel de mon agent, qui l’était depuis quatre ans. Il m’a dit « Ok Shenae, ca n’a pas marché pour The Wire, alors nous devons commencer à chercher ailleurs. Et je me suis dis, Ok. Oh et bien c’est la vie” Je n’étais pas si déprimée mais il semblait qu’il y avait quelque chose d’irréalisable pour moi. Et puis 20 minutes plus tard, j’ai eu un appel de mon agent qui disait « Félicitations, Hilary n’est plus de la partie et toi tu l’es et tu es maintenant Annie dans le nouveau 90210 » J’étais en état choc pendant bien deux heures.

UGO : A quelle point c’est cool d’avoir Rob Estes (Melrose Place) et Lori Loughlin (Fête à la maison) comme parents ? Ils ne sont pas tout à fait moches …

SG : Oh mon Dieu, c’est totalement pas coryable. Je me souviens quand j’ai vu Lori Loughlin à l’écran et je me suis dis « Les gars, j’ai vu Tante Becky ! J’ai vu Tante Becky ! » Je n’ai pas du tout fait le lien avec le fait qu’elle auditionnait pour le rôle de ma mère. Et puiis, quand nous avons toutes les deux étaient prises je me suis dis « Oh mon Dieu, nous nous ressemblons beaucoup » C’était même un peu effrayant. Elle me ressemblait plus que ma propre mère. C’est complètement flatteur aussi car je ne pouvais pas demander mieux comme parents. Ils sont très beaux, si gentils et chaleureux. Ils ont pris le rôle des parents à cœur, ils m’ont donné leur numéros et m’ont dit «  Tout ce dont tu as besoin, avant de partir, si tu veux aller visiter un endroit .. » Ils ont été juste géniaux et d’un grand soutien. Ils savaient que j’étais une jeune fille qui avait quitté sa maison pour la première fois et qui a été laché seule dans un nouveau pays. Alors ils ont été bons avec moi, et j’avais hâte de les revoir en tournage. Ca fait longtemps qu’ils jouaient, ils étaient pros. Et moi j’apprenais ce que je pouvais. Et aussi Jessica Walter (qui joue la grand-mère ex-actrice alcoolique d’Annie), qui est une pro. Elle est assez old-school comme actrice Hollywoodienne. Alors j’apprends et je construis de cette relation et essaye de grandir du mieux que je peux.

UGO: Que connaissais-tu de la série originale avant de signer pour 90210 ?

SG : Nous avons eu les quatre premières saisons de Beverly Hills 90210 envoyées en DVD comme cadeau de bienvenue. C’était génial, mais je n’ai pas eu besoin de les regarder une nouvelle fois pour me rappeler, parce que je me souviens des quatre premières saisons particulièrement comme le dos de ma main. Ma mère m’a élevé avec 90210 et Party of Five. Alors j’étais rodée avec l’ancienne version. C’est tellement excitant pour moi et evidemment tout le monde est honoré d’avoir Jennie, Shannen et Joe E. Tata de retour sur la série, mais pour moi c’est un vrai, un vrai choc,  et ca se passe réellement dans cet endroit où je suis. C’est cool, et plus qu’une situation Tob-Lori, c’est un tel honneur de les avoir avec moi. Je rechercher vraiment en eux un modèle comme ils m’offrent parce ils sont les seuls à avoir traverser ce que nous sommes prêt à vivre.

UGO: 90210 est le genre de série qui peut propulser une jeune actrice. Es-tu prête pour tout ? - couverture de magazine, paparazzi, les articles sur Internet, etc. – qui t’arrivera peut-être dans un futur proche ?

SG : Je ne sais pas. Je ne sais pas pourquoi je suis dedans. Je n’ai jamais fais ça auparavant. C’est mon premier show américain, laissée seule dans ce phénomène fou qu’il est et qu’il est sur le point de devenir. Nous avons en fait déjà fais plusieurs couverture de magazines. En si peu de temps nous avons fait une ou deux séances photos chaque weekend. C’était un peu bizarre. J’adore prendre de jolie photo et être bien habillé pour jouer et tout le reste, mais c’était genre « C’est pour quoi tout ca ? » Nous n’avons même pas encore la série. Amener moi sur le tournage. Laissez moi faire le vrai travail que je suis censée faire. C’était un peu irréel. Une fois que nous étions sur le tournage je me disais : Allez maintenant je sens que la roue tourne, maintenant je sens que ca va le faire » Alors maintenant les séances photos le weekend sont la crème sur le gateau de ce que nous faisons. Mais autant que la presse et les paparazzi et tous les autres trucs, c’est vraiment un monde étranger pour moi. Merci mon Dieu je suis entourée par les meilleurs personnes. Alors nous apprenons tous des uns et des autres et nous avons prévus de tous nous tenir la main pour marcher à travers cette folie qui est en train d’arriver.
